Train derails after hitting dump truck

An Amtrak train carrying more than 100 people has derailed near Kansas City, Missouri after colliding with a critical truck. The incident occurred at around 11:30 this morning as the locomotive was travelling through a rural area of the state on its way to Chicago. Initial reports indicate that upwards of one dozen have been injured, though thankfully there are no reported life-threatening injuries and all individuals are accounted for. The Amtrak train, known as Train 188, was carrying 113 passengers when it derailed. The train was carrying 106 passengers and five crew members, according to the National Transportation Safety Board. One person was killed in the derailment and 10 others suffered injuries that were not life-threatening. Amtrak crew members and law enforcement officers are inspecting the site of the derailment of a Coast Guard-crewed barge that hit an Amtrak passenger train near Kansas City this morning, according to Coast Guard spokeswoman Marylee Hanley. A train's wheels apparently failed while going through a curve in southwest Missouri, said Bill DeWitt of Union Pacific Railroad, which owns the tracks where the accident occurred.
